Dan is Always Right
I have an announcement to make.   But it all has to be prefaced by the following: Dan is always right.  Now that we have that out of the way, I can get to my story.

Yesterday, I got into work, still feeling awful that I'd lost my son's Nintendo DS games.

I had talked with Dan on Monday night, and he had suggested that I call the movie theatre.  He said "you never know, maybe someone found them and turned them in".  In my typical pessimistic way, I poopoo'd (is that a word? Apparently it's not. But it should be) the idea, thinking no one would return such a valuable thing.  I mean, one Nintendo game costs around $25 to 30 bucks new! There were nine of them in this case.

Yesterday morning I posted my blog about losing the games.  I linked the blog to my Facebook account.  A lot of people here and in Facebook suggested I call around to see if anyone turned them in.  Someone even suggested I call the grocery store specifically.

Having only but a shred of faith left in mankind, I called the grocery store and asked if they'd found a small case with a bunch of kid's games in them.

They had them.

Can you believe this?  Someone turned them in on Saturday and the courtesy desk had kept them in case we came back for them.

So, I went on my Facebook link, and I told the people who had commented there that I had found them. I specifically thanked the person who had suggested the grocery store, because it hadn't occurred to me at all that we lost them there.

Dan then commented.  I'd like to share our Facebook exchange with you all here.

Dan
It occurs to me that someone in your life pointed out that it was likely to turn up at a lost and found... Someone who perhaps is due credit for being the rock of calm and stability in your otherwise turbulent world of child-related drama. Someone who.... yes, yes, I'm pretty certain it's someone who likes hearing three special magic words!

Dan? You were right.

ahhhh, that's the stuff...

That's a gem right there, isn't it?

Anyway, I used this experience with my son to teach him that there was some nice child somewhere who found his games inside the little car attached to the cart, which he sat in while we shopped.  He left the games inside the little car.  My son was very grateful, and he understood that for a child to return something like that was no small thing.  I suppose I've learned from it too. First, I realized it was not me who lost the games, but my son. Whew. Perhaps I'm not such a bad parent after all?  Further, I've learned that not all people are crazy or mean, or selfish. Not everyone acts in their own best interests.  Sometimes, people do the right thing.

I've also learned that Dan has some weird (good) juju that works like this: somehow when people around him lose things they tend to find them.  I didn't know Dan had supernatural powers.  Perhaps that's something he should have put in his online dating profile before we met.

So we found the games, Dan is always right, and to top it all off I'm starting my day with a comment from the aide on my son's bus who looked at me and said "Wow, you've lost a lot of weight!" as he boarded the bus this morning (sans Nintendo games, I assure you).

Life. Is. Good.

Don't give up your cynical life view just yet. It was probably turned in by some senior citizen who had no idea they were holding on to a small fortune in games.

Well, what a nice ending to your dramatic saga of the lost video games! And finding out there are some honest people out there is a great benefit too! Can't wait until you blog one day that Dan "isn't ALWAYS right" because I'm sure that day will come! LOL (Sorry Dan!)

Have a great day!

I was out at a movie one night, and I would often just stick my cards, ID, etc., in a keychain/ID holder from grad school. It fell out of my purse, and I didn't realize it was missing until the next morning. Not only did it have my bank card and ID in it, it also had a $200 Best Buy card!

Somebody had turned it in, and nothing was missing. Stuff like this helps me keep my faith in humanity.

I am glad you discovered the honest people. They do exist. I have turned in $100 bills and other valuable items. To me it would never be worth the guilt, knowing that some poor kid lost his toys.

WOW -- I'm like you -- I'd never believe that someone would have turned them in -- I'm more apt to follow Corbie's logic above (hahaha). Congrats on not ruining your son's life! And the "you've lost a lot of weight" comment from the bus aide -- wooohooo! You do look great! Lucy

Poopoo is the word i've been looking for. I'm a constant poopooer. I can't help it. I should stop being so negative--maybe then I'll find my proverbial DS games!!!!

PS: When sorta-strangers start commenting on your hot new bod--its time to REJOICE!!!!!!

Sounds like an all around happy day - also - Dan sounds like a keeper - I have had a one for 37 years (I know, rare since we were so young) - and I am afraid he is usually right - but I have learned just to be grateful- and most of the time listen to him! Congratulations on the compliment of losing weight! I think this weight loss thing can be addictive - :)

About two years ago I was hurrying to work and dropped some letters in the blue freestanding mailbox outside my building. About two days later I realized I had dumped $400 in cash into the same box. I called the post office and they had me describe the money and the deposit slip that has been dumped into the mailbox along with it. And then they invited me down to the local station where they cheerfully handed me back the cash.
